General information and properties:
Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis ) is distinguished by its high Limonene content (approximately 95%), which has a sedative, relaxing, calming and digestive action in humans and animals.
anti-inflammatory activity
Limonene suppresses the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF - α and nitric oxide (NO). An increase in the production of TNF - α is associated with the appearance of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatism, psoriasis and arthritis. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulates the production of TNF-α. Orange peel essential oil (80.5% Limonene and 2.9% Myrcene) at a concentration of 100 μg/mL inhibits LPS-mediated TNF - α production by 50-fold.
NO is produced by several types of cells, especially macrophages. LPS stimulates the production of NO. It is NOT part of the body's defense mechanisms against bacteria and viruses. However, an exaggerated production of NO damages the cells. Since NO is an important regulator of inflammatory activity, NO measurement is a method to measure the anti-inflammatory activity of essential oils. Orange peel essential oil (80.5% Limonene and 2.9% Myrcene) at a concentration of 100 μg/mL inhibited LPS-mediated NO production by 2.1-fold. Natural medicines are safer and more cyclooxygenase.
